Wordless Wednesday

By Molly, age 7
Me: How is the tree loving?
Molly: Because all the animals and birds want to be near the tree.
Me: I would like to have a loving grap tree, too.
Molly: I will get you one, mama.

Teaser Tuesday: The Homecoming of Samuel Lake

"It wasn't as if Bernice ever actually chased after Samuel. She just managed to drape herself someplace where he couldn't help but see her, and she talked to him in the silky, honey-drip voice, and she acted, well-- amused." p. 77, The Homecoming of Samuel Lake by Jenny Wingfield.

From the jacket: Every first Sunday in June, members of the Moses clan gather for an annual reunion at “the old home place,” a sprawling hundred-acre farm in Arkansas. And every year, Samuel Lake, a vibrant and committed young preacher, brings his beloved wife, Willadee Moses, and their three children back for the festivities. Read more

Monday Morning Inspiration: What will your verse be?

In the film DEAD POETS SOCIETY, written by Tom Schulman, the character John Keating says

"We don't read and write poetry because it's cute. We read and write poetry because we are members of the human race. And the human race is filled with passion. And medicine, law, business, engineering, these are noble pursuits and necessary to sustain life. But poetry, beauty, romance, love, these are what we stay alive for. To quote from Whitman, "O me! O life!... of the questions of these recurring; of the endless trains of the faithless... of cities filled with the foolish; what good amid these, O me, O life?" Answer. That you are here - that life exists, and identity; that the powerful play goes on and you may contribute a verse. That the powerful play *goes on* and you may contribute a verse.

What will your verse be?"

Here's the video version of that same paragraph. Oh, so inspiring!

Friday Potpourri: The Author Photo

This made me laugh. The only shot missing is the photo with dog. I happen to come across many of those in books.

Booking Through Thursday: 5 books to reread

This week's Booking Through Thursday question is a good one: If you could only select five books to reread in a lifetime, what would they be and why?

To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee - This is one of those stories that gifts the reader with something new at each reading.

Madame Bovary by Gustave Flaubert - I do reread this novel every few years. It never gets boring. It's always contemporary. It always boggles the mind that it was written hundreds of years ago.

Durable Goods by Elizabeth Berg - For me, Durable Goods is the comfort food of books. (I feel that way about most of Berg's books.) I love getting to spend time with the main character.

Happiness Is A Serious Problem by Dennis Prager - I get so much out of Dennis Prager's philosophy on happiness. This book will be a reread for life because of its admonitions that we are obligated to be happy and to focus on continually counting our blessings.

The Bible - Mercy. Grace. Wisdom. Drama. Spectacle. Miracles. Faith. Hope.
